How to get from Piazzale Roma to St Mark’s Square

From Piazzale Roma to St Mark’s Square, you can cross the historic centre entirely on foot or use water transport to reduce the walking section. Piazzale Roma is the end of the road network: buses and trams do not continue to San Marco.

The right choice depends on how much you want to walk, your luggage and the kind of journey you want. For many visitors, the walk is part of the experience; for others, the waterbus is more practical.

Main options

  • Walk all the way. Cross Venice through calli and campi without buying another ticket.
  • Waterbus + short walk. Reduces walking and can be useful with luggage.
  • Mixed route. Depending on the stop and current service, the planner may suggest a combination.

Which option should you choose?

If you are travelling light and want to see Venice, walking is often the most rewarding choice. If you have luggage, young children or simply want to walk less, compare a waterbus route.

For visitors, a single ticket including navigation costs much more than an ordinary mainland bus/tram ticket. If you expect several waterbus trips during the day, compare the single fare with a time-based pass.

Practical tips

  • Do not look for a bus direct to San Marco: road transport ends at Piazzale Roma.
  • With luggage, consider bridges and steps before choosing the full walking route.
  • If you will use more waterbuses later, check whether a pass is better value.
  • Crowded central streets can make the walking route slower than expected.
  • Use the live route planner shortly before leaving.
