Located in the courtyard, among Istrian stone, Renaissance perspectives and institutional passages, it transformed the election of the doge into a public, visible and controlled gesture. Looking at it today means reading a concrete fragment of the Republic: not only architecture, but ceremony, authority, urban space and the collective gaze.

In the courtyard of the Doge’s Palace, not on a façade

The Giants’ Staircase does not welcome visitors from the outside: it is located in the inner courtyard of the Doge’s Palace, on the eastern side, like a scene prepared within the political heart of Venice. This position is essential to understanding it. It was not a simple monumental staircase, but a point of passage between the open space, where the city could look on, and the rooms of power, reserved for the magistracies and the doge.

Built at the end of the fifteenth century to a design by Antonio Rizzo, the staircase takes its name from the two large statues of Mars and Neptune, added in the sixteenth century by Jacopo Sansovino at the top. The figures alluded to the military strength and maritime dominion of the Serenissima.

Here the new doge was crowned before those present in the courtyard: not hidden in a hall, but exposed in a threshold space, where authority became visible and public.

The moment when the doge became visible

The election of the doge was a controlled procedure, made up of votes, lots and verifications among the patricians. But power, in Venice, was not enough to choose: it had to be shown. The Giants’ Staircase served precisely to transform a political decision into a public image.

After the election, the new head of the Republic climbed to the upper landing and there received the ducal horn, the rigid headgear that identified his dignity. It was not a royal crown in a monarchical sense: the doge did not become an absolute sovereign, but the first magistrate of an aristocratic republic, bound by oaths and controls. Precisely for this reason the rite took place before the eyes of those present in the courtyard: visibility confirmed that authority belonged to a shared order, not to an isolated person.

The elevated position made the gesture legible from below. Between the statues of Mars and Neptune, added in the sixteenth century, the doge appeared framed by two immediate symbols: military strength and dominion over the sea. The coronation thus became a political declaration condensed into a few meters of stone.

Why it is called the Giants’ Staircase

The name does not come from the size of the steps, but from the two colossal figures that dominate the upper landing: Mars and Neptune. Created by Jacopo Sansovino in the sixteenth century, the statues transform the arrival at the top into a scene of power that was legible even to those watching from below.

Mars alludes to armed strength, to the Republic’s ability to defend itself and fight; Neptune recalls the sea, the routes, the Adriatic and Venetian authority over the waters. Together, the two “giants” declare that the head of State did not receive only a personal honor: he was inserted into a political system that presented itself as military, maritime and public.

The materials also contribute to the message. The light-colored Istrian stone, the marble of the figures and the scenic placement create a sharp contrast with the decorated surfaces of the Palace. Anyone ascending toward the top was framed by enormous bodies, almost watched over by civic allegories. For this reason the Giants’ Staircase is not only an architectural passage: it is a visual device designed to make Venetian authority appear ancient, solemn and inevitable.

To understand it in person, it is best to stop first at the bottom, slightly to the side. From there one can see that the staircase is not designed only for climbing: it forces the gaze to aim toward the high landing, transforming it into a small State stage.

Then observe three levels. The first is architectural: the wide steps, the balustrades and the frontal axis guide the ceremony like a controlled procession. The second is political: whoever received the ducal horn appeared in an elevated position, but enclosed between images larger than himself, Mars and Neptune, as a reminder that personal authority remained subordinate to the Republic. The third is urban: the scene took place before chosen witnesses, in the heart of the palace, but ideally spoke to all of Venice.

Before continuing, also look at the relationship with the Foscari Arch and with the inner façades: they are not neutral backdrops, but frames that concentrate light, stone and power in a single visible point.

Stopping in front of the Giants’ Staircase helps one understand the Doge’s Palace beyond its most famous rooms. Here Venice constructed a measured distance between the doge and the city: close enough to be seen, high enough to embody a role. The statues, the position in the courtyard and the ceremonial function tell of a power made of images, rules and routes. For this reason it is worth not crossing the space in a hurry, but observing how every step still participates in the political memory of the city.

[74
733,903,896,55,904,10
post-1441","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-arte-e-cultura","tag-doge","tag-jacopo-sansovino-en","tag-palazzo-ducale","tag-san-marco","tag-scala-dei-giganti-en","tag-venezia

The Giants’ Staircase: where the doge became doge before the city —
