Foscari, doge from 1423 to 1457, is shown not as an absolute sovereign, but as a figure inserted into a higher system: St. Mark, the law, the magistracies, institutional continuity.<\/p>\n The group visible today is a nineteenth-century reconstruction: the original was damaged and removed in the political climate that followed the fall of the old Republic. This detail also helps to read the work: those who wanted to erase the old regime struck precisely the image in which civil authority and the symbol of St. Mark were joined together.<\/p>\n Around it, statues and reliefs of virtues reinforce the same idea. Justice, fortitude, prudence and the other civic qualities do not merely decorate: they explain how Venice wished to be seen by those entering the decision-making center of the State.<\/p>\n To truly read the Porta della Carta, it is best not to stop only at the central group. Look at it as a vertical page: from the level of the arch, where the flow toward the courtyard passed, up to the pinnacles that transform the marble into a kind of Gothic lace.
