Over the centuries there were several Bucintori, replaced when they became old or no longer suited to official taste. The last one, launched in the eighteenth century, was destroyed after the fall of the Republic in 1797: an act that struck not only a vessel, but a visible emblem of dogal power.<\/p>\n
The Marriage of the Sea: the ritual of power<\/h2>\n
The Bucintoro found its highest meaning in the Festa della Sensa<\/strong>, celebrated on Ascension Day. On that occasion the doge left the Doge\u2019s Palace and boarded the ceremonial ship, followed by magistrates, ambassadors, patricians and by a procession of boats that transformed the basin of San Marco into an open-air political scene.<\/p>\n The route led toward the Lido, near the entrance to the lagoon. Here the Marriage of the Sea<\/em> was performed: the doge threw a gold ring into the water while pronouncing a formula that affirmed Venetian dominion over the sea. The gesture was not a simple propitiatory rite, but a public declaration of sovereignty over the Adriatic and over the maritime routes on which the Republic\u2019s trade, security and prestige depended.<\/p>\n The ceremony recalled precise political memories: the expedition of Pietro II Orseolo to Dalmatia in the year 1000 and, later, the symbolic confirmation of Venetian primacy after the events linked to Pope Alexander III and the peace of 1177. On the Bucintoro, therefore, dogal power was not only represented: it was ritualized, repeated and made visible before the city and foreign guests.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n More than a simple galley, the Bucintoro was a floating stage built to be seen. The last example, launched in the eighteenth century, exceeded thirty meters in length and moved forward thanks to forty-two long oars, handled by selected arsenal workers. The slow and regular propulsion allowed the procession to maintain a solemn, almost theatrical pace.<\/p>\n The structure was designed on two levels: below were the rowers, largely hidden; above opened a covered ceremonial loggia, intended for the doge, the dignitaries and the ambassadors. Political command thus appeared elevated, ordered, framed by columns, curtains and carvings.<\/p>\n The decoration transformed the wood into a visual manifesto. Gilding, allegorical figures, coats of arms and sculptures celebrated Venice as a just, rich and protected power. The surfaces shone under the light of the lagoon, multiplying the scenic effect during navigation. Even the absence of military functions was significant: this ship did not intimidate with cannons, but with splendor, discipline and control of public space.<\/p>\n With the fall of the Republic in 1797, the last Bucintoro lost its political meaning even before its material substance. In 1798 the French authorities had the gilding and sculpted apparatus removed to recover the precious metal; the hull, deprived of its symbolic role, was dismantled and put to other uses. The end was therefore not a simple episode of demolition, but the intentional erasure of an emblem of Venetian sovereignty.<\/p>\n Yet precisely from that loss comes its persistence in the imagination. Views, engravings and models preserved the form of the ducal vessel: the double order, the monumental stern, the allegorical statues, the throne covered by a canopy. Works by Canaletto, Guardi and other painters of lagoon festivals transformed the state machine into visual memory. Today fragments, graphic reconstructions and historical images allow us to read it not as a wreck, but as one of the most effective political scenographies produced by Venice.<\/p>\n Fragments, descriptions, engravings and visual memories remain of the original Bucintoro, but its symbolic force continues to say a great deal about the Serenissima. It was a political machine as well as an artistic one, designed to be seen by the city and by the world. Retracing its history allows us to observe Venice not only as a place of beauty, but as a complex system of rituals, images and power.
